The other day, I posted an email that Steven Wolfe, Editor for BEAR Magazine had written up and had sent to Scott McGillivray, Editor for BEEF Magazine. Steven's email was sent on July 17th however I posted it here on PlanetBears only on July 28th, allowing both parties time to reply.

Right after I posted that article, I received Steven Wolfe's press release, one which rubricates his offer to BEEF. I got back to Steven to let him know that I'll have the press release up on the site by this weekend.

Oh... I also got a message from Scott.

Scott is informing us that he has received as well as acknowledges the 'press release / letter / offer' (as Scott puts it), and he's assuring everyone at PlanetBears that, and I quote: "once his tongue (from having been bitten so hard) has stopped bleeding, a professional and measured response will be forthcoming".

What does it all mean...?

I need my blanket...

I'll post Steven Wolfe's press release ASAP... as well as any other developments.

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

I received an interesting email from Steven Wolfe, Editor-in-Chief of BEAR Magazine. It was so interesting that I read it twice (ok, 3 times). after reading it, I got back to BEAR, asking them what's this about, and they responded that it's legit and they sent out this very email to several sources. I asked them if they wanted this email posted up as news here on PlanetBears, and BEAR replied 'yes, and soon there will be a press release'.

What's this all about...? Essentially, BEEF Magazine went digital with their last issue (#47). Scott McGillivray, Editor-in-Chief of BEEF mag, wrote in his editorial that he's excited about the new directions that BEEF is heading and that the new "fully electronic transition  may be only temporary, and a hard-copy  magazine may return to accompany the online version in the coming months", however the bottom line is that Scott stated he was quite happy and now that he's online, that the world, is once again, his oyster.

I posted an article about the new digital Beef, and it was shortly after that when I received the following email from Steven (for the record, the email was sent out on July 17th;  I didn't post it earlier as I wanted to clear everything with both Scott and Steve, and to also let both parties know that they have an open invitation to reply back or have their say here on PlanetBears).

At the moment, I don't have any comments and I will simply await for the press release as well as other responses or developments. The following is the email from Steven Wolfe:

Dear Mr. McGillivray,

I was truly sorry to learn of your decision to cease print publication of “100% Beef.” Although we took largely different courses during the past two years, since our resurrection of BEAR® Magazine from the dust bin, we genuinely appreciated that your point of view added to create a larger marketplace of ideas that now is diminished by the loss of your magazine.

As the last editor of the old BEAR magazine, before it crashed and burned thousands of paid subscribers and advertisers in about 2001, I’m sure your current decision must bring back painful personal memories of that prior bad ending.  Certainly, your 2008 editorial lamenting our resumption of BEAR® Magazine observed that the ill-will created by not being able to deliver real magazines to paid subscribers is both embarrassing and long-lived. C’est la vie.

I applaud your decision to attempt to maintain a webzine to mitigate damages to subscribers, but there is nothing like the portability and convenience of a real, tangible, full-color magazine, stuffed with hot images of bearded men. While some of your subscribers will roll with this punch, many will feel bitterly disappointed or even betrayed that what they bought will not be delivered. However, we think we can help lighten your burden.

To put it simply: We are offering to mail a free copy of our current issue, BEAR® #71, to all your current subscribers and to provide them with future issues of BEAR® for the remainder of their subscriptions at our cost plus postage. We will also accommodate all your advertisers at promotional rates for our big, Winter, issue. This offer is good through the end of this month.

The arrangement we propose would be the proverbial “win-win” for everyone concerned. If you agree, please let me know and provide a spread sheet with contact and subscription information for your current subscribers, and I’m sure we can work out a joint press release to advise them of this new, exciting option.

Although I mentioned before the Xmas holidays that issue #45 (cover) of BEEF Mag (website - articles - TubeBear) is out and available, I just wanted to send out a thank you to their editor Scott McGillivray for doing an excellent job with this rag which has been around for 5-6 years now. Congrats and thanks a bunch for all the support you've given us (with ads like one and this one), and keep up the good work with Rusty Spot Design.

I should have mentioned this last week, however I received my copy of BEEF Magazine issue #45 (website - articles - coverTubeBear) in my PO mailbox with the cover of Uncle Bubba who some of you might remember was on the cover of BEAR magazine #57 (website - articlesTubeBear). "100% BEEF #45 (website - articles - TubeBear) is now in stores. Featuring more of the thick, burly bulk that made us famous, and some of the finest artwork and photography we've ever published, BEEF #45 is one issue you will definitely want for your collection! Uber talented photographer Inked Kenny has photographed 'Uncle Bubba' for this issue's cover. As many of you will remember, we featured 'Uncle Bubba' on the cover of the Original BEAR Magazine, Issue #57  (website - articlesTubeBear) back in the day. SFBearHunter, one of our best and most prolific contributing photographers, shot Billy for us, a stunning, hairy hunk with one of the biggest 'personalities' we've ever published. This issue also features spectacular artwork by David Southern and French artist Logan, a true-life Truck Stop Bear Blow tale, a 'Second Glance' (finally in full fleshy color) of two of your early 100% BEEF favorites, and page after page of the brand of burly, masculine goodness you all have come to expect from our magazine".

The cover for BEEF's  (website - articles - cover - TubeBear) latest issue - #44 - is very dark, brooding... very inviting. Their cover model is named Moose and he's looking dangerous in his leather jockstrap and master cap. And now that BEEF has gone all colour, well the mag is just rich with content and good looking guys. Available in stores and you can order a subscription from their site.

I received my copy of BEEF magazine last week, issue #41 (cover) for February/March. BEEF (website - articles - profile) is now in full cover and this issue is just as hot as all the others. From their site, they state that they apologize for the delay when it came to shipping #41 because they have switched to a new printer (I gather since they went full cover), and that they are still working out the 'kinks' with this new partnership. Anyhow, I got my copy, and it's looking good.

I'm currently providing my animation and designer services on a freelance basis at my sister site Heavenly Dark Studios. In more Bound in Ink related news, I am in the process of working out this years 2009 collection.  The first show will be in April at Philadelphia. Editor of magazine Beef Mag (website) Scott McGillivray (website - profile) is letting us know that their 40th issue will soon be out for Dec / Jan. And good news, they have now switched to all color throughout the magazine. You see that thumbnail image of Roger (enlarge - galleries - profile)...? That's our ad that will be showing up in their mag. A huge thanks to Scott for designing it.

In other news - they are starting to making plans for their very first 100 BEEF weekend at the Canyon Club Resort in Palm Springs over Memorial Day Weekend 2009. There's not many details as of now but we'll keep you informed as we get more.

Lastly, Scott is wishing to inform all that BEEF is in no way associated with the 'new' BEAR magazine (website - profile). For those who don't know, Scott was the editor for BEAR but this was when the magazine was owned by Brush Creek Media. Recently, the group Bear Omnimedia (website) has acquired the rights to the 'BEAR' trademark, yet they are not affiliated in any way.

ps - here's the full sized image of that thumbnail pic of Roger.

Hot off the press is the latest issue of 100% BEEF Mag (website - articles - profile), and that would issue #39 (cover).

Some really great looking men in this issue, like Clint Taylor who's been in many a Bear movie, a well known Bear model. Then there's the real hot Devlin Michaels. And on the cover: Bill... triple woof. Bill is a 50 year old Daddy from San Fran. Overall, this is a real handsome looking issue. Oh, and from what I read from the editorial, we might be seeing some more leather... very cool. You can find a copy of BEEF Mag probably at your nearest adult store, or the best way is to simply order a subscription from their site.

[members - click here] I've been an FOGB for years... what... you don't know what an FOGB is...? It stands for 'Fan of GagBear'... which I've been. Actually, I've been an FOGB for well over a decade... drooling over GagBears' photos and videos that he's produced.

His name is Jim Grrowl yet he's better known as GagBear. I first came across his pictures online back in '95 or so on this wicked site called 'Big Ad'. Now Big Ad was first a magazine with ads from Bears and Chubs, and they were one of the very 1st companies to try and market their product online. They had a great site which they updated every so often with photos of cute guys that were in their mag. Unfortunately the site, as well as the magazine, went defunct (reasons unknown), however I did copy/pasted those photos of Jim GagBear and kept them on my hard drive because these pics were some of the very first 'Bear bondage' photos that I saw on the net.

It wasn't until '02 (7 years later) when I came across more of Jim GagBear's material. This time he was working with a couple of guys who made a few videos under the company name 'Realman Kink Video'. I contacted Jim for the 1st time and he turned out to be one of the nicest and coolest guys I spoke to online. I asked him if he was the same guy from the Big Ad spread, and he said he was, and that's when my admiration for this man began.

At the time I was working on Bear-Pics so I helped him promote their videos, yet the company didn't last long and they ceased production. However GagBear went on to a spread in Beef Mag, photo shoots for BearBound, and lately he has been making his own videos which you can purchase from his site BD Bear Studios.

GagBear has sent me many photos which I used to have up on Bear-Pics and I decided to bring them over to the PlanetBears Galleries. You can see them here (there's just over 200 photos). On a personal note: I've always hoped to work with him on a photo shoot, and we were supposed to meet up at one point in '02, however his schedule didn't permit it, and since he's 3000 miles away... well... sometimes things aren't all that easy to organize. For now, I'll just have to admire GagBear like the rest of y'all; thru the pics he puts out on the net, and thank Heaven for that.

PlanetBears got a Beefy Oops... in the latest Beef Mag #38. You see, in the previous issue, Beef (website - profile) did a feature on us, entitle 'Sexy Beasts - the Big, Beautiful, Burly Bruisers of PlanetBear.com'... if you notice, they forgot the 's' --- it should be PlanetBear'S' not PlanetBear. So we got an Oops for that in the latest issue, which is very cool of Beef to do so... it put a smile on my face because... in a way... we got featured all over again, in a small but cute and furry way.
