Back in 1995 a guy named Randy Stern founded the Gen-X Bears movement. What Gen-X was, to the best of my knowledge, was a concept that being a Bear didn't necessarily signify you had to be older; that younger men could be Bears as well. Also, when you are 18 years old and a little lost in the world, a Gen-X club was a way in meeting friends who are just like yourself so as to help these young men accept earlier on that it's ok to be a Bear.
The Gen-X had a busy mailing list for a few years and there were quite of few clubs that formed with activities such as bowling or non-alcoholic parties. However, the Gen-X concept just never really caught on, and like one remaining Gen-X webpage says:
"Bears of Generation X are all now legal drinking age. The Bear community has changed. The web is different - more universal, yet more scattered than ever before. Clubs have changed. Some Generation X Bear communities have survived. Some imploded. Some fizzled".
In any account, Gen-X made sense in the mid-90s because the net was new for most of us so young and old were all discovering the wonderful world of Bear. Randy Stern did his part in adding to the Bear culture, so check out his blog - The Journey.

Ever wonder where things come from... like.. who invented the neck tie...? You probably don't, but there are always some fun tidbits here and there that make up your culture. One such article would be the Bear flag. Arguably it's been credited to Craig Byrnes who opened (and later sold) the Bear Manufacturing. Why did I say it's arguable? Well because there had been debates on a now defunct mailing list as to the flag's origins, but it's hard to argue with their point that "Bob (Craig's friend) bought a deluxe box of crayons for Craig's birthday, and Craig began his search of suitable colors for his flag". I'll take Craig's word that he did the flag, also because Craig is super cute. Yes, looks assist sometimes in this world, especially if you're this cute Bear who likes deluxe boxes of crayons.
Read more about the history of the Bear flag as well as the ghey rainbow flag, leather as well the bi. Semiotics can be fun sometimes.
