Going thru my archives, I came across an artist that I hadn't checked his site out in years. It had been 6 years or so since the last time I mentioned his work, and I was glad to see that he is still plugging away at his art.

His name is Chris Komater - website - and he does some really 'special' stuff in relation to fur. This is what I wrote concerning his work back in November '01 on Bear-Pics: "Sometimes you think - everything has been done with fur; that nothing new can come out of fur. We, the Bear lovers of the planet, have gotten used to the little furry events in our lives that we take for granted - like pulling fur from our teeth after a night of romp, or spending hours unclogging the tub when our trick takes a shower. And we, the Bear lovers of the world, we just can't seem to get enough of fur on photograph. We scurry about the net picking up as many furry pics as our hard drives can muster. And even though we stroke our knob as we examine or lick all the fur of the world, we realize - nothing new can be done with fur.

Well, my little fur-inhalers, today you are going to experience something new with fur, and we have to thank Chris Komater for this. Now, it might not be what you expect. New things sometimes take awhile to get used to. I'll be honest here and say that some of his stuff is really great, while some of his stuff I just don't understand. But hey, I'm not cultured, so what the hell do I know...?".

You have to check out his stuff (like his 'Jack and Mack' project), and I seem to have rediscovered his material at a good time because he now has a sale going on for some of his prints. Also, take a look at this recent Bearotic interview.

$33.6 Million Share, RSS
Wednesday, May 14, 2008

I really know nothing about art. I don't know why one painting is sold for millions while another painting is sold for nothing. There's way too much politics within the art world that I know nothing about, however some artist make it, some don't (how insightful of me, huh...).

However, what's interesting here - altho this is a painting of a woman - it's a painting of an obese woman... and while many people will find that disgusting, I know that a lot of people get equally turned by that. I know a lot of guys who get turned on by men who look like that or else there would be no need for sites like SuperChubs.

What's even more interesting - this painting went for $33.6M at an auction. The painter is Lucian Freud, the grandson of Sigmund Freud, and this painting which is entitled 'Benefits Supervisor Sleeping' (Google) sets a price record for a work by a living artist.

Anyhow, what's interesting here is - the model is an overweight woman and not some gorgeous skinny young lass, and the amount of money it received is just phenomenal. So can someone explain to me... just what it beauty?

Anyhow... 'Big Sue' is the model... and what did she have to say: "I think he probably picked me because he got value for money. He got a lot of flesh".

This happens quite a bit on the internet - there's these guys with a ton of talent and yet they don't have a website. Take AJCBear, for example, here's this guy who does some pretty remarkable Bear paintings and once I contacted him, he directed me to his Google group. Someone needs to open up a site for this fine artist, don't you think? I would but I'm too busy, thanks, but at least I thought it, right?

Check out more of his stuff here (on BallBellyBear). And email him. Nice guy.

You've heard of the Bear Naked Ladies (honestly, that's what they should have called themselves). Well, how about some Bear Naked Art! <-- and with an exclamation point at that...(!)

I'm not positive but I believe that Bear Naked Art is affiliated with Inside Bear Magazine. Take a look around; there are 6 artists listed to which you can browse their galleries of naked Bear art.

Now for those who'd be interested in having their work displayed there, well there's no contact list. I would say the best bet would be to contact Emanoyhl from Inside Bear and go from there.

It's time to lose yourself for a little while in the wonderful watercolour world that belongs to Ray Conser. First off ~ he's frikkin' cute - he looks like he's a blond (I'll have 2 like him to go, please, thanks). Yet there is some serious talent attached to this Daddy drawer. Just flip through some of his prints that he has for sale. He also has originals available for purchase. Need a bit more? There's some more of his artwork here on Bear Naked Art.

A bit about Ray, from his site: "Ray Conser, watercolor artist, resides in San Diego and has been creating his artwork for the last 35 years. He enjoys art as a creative process rather than a profession. Having worked in various forms of art media for most of his life. Over the past six years, he's discovered that watercolor provides him with the best means to deliver emotional impact.

Ray's approach to the world of fetish art is to zoom in to a microscopic view of details normally lost in the everyday. As one focuses closely on his subject, the viewer's mind is seduced to complete the remainder of the picture. 'Your mind is much more vivid and personal in the completion of that picture than any brush can be', Ray explains. 'I hope that my paintings are the catalyst to your deeper understanding, enabling you to experience my art in your unique, personal way'".

Thursday, March 8, 2007

Back in 2000 I wrote this book and I called it Surrogate Son. I sent it off to a publishing house and they sent it back with a letter saying 'we're not really sure what to do with this'.

So rather than drive myself crazy looking for a publisher at the time, I instead put my book up on the site for members only. What was cool was the feedback ~ emails from people saying they liked the book.

Well I thought I'd just let it go and give it to the public. I was never expecting to have this in print because I don't believe in killing trees for anything that I would write anyhow.

Just note ~ this isn't porn... it's fiction, so if you're looking for a lot of grabbing and groping, then this book isn't for you.

Download it here: Word Doc. (zip) and also in WordPerfect (zip). It's about 300 pages or so. And if you are able to get through the whole book (the 1st 50 pages are a bit slow but it picks up... it does!)... if you're able to finish it, then it would be great if you'd email me your thoughts on it.

ps - the extremely handsome face to the cover of Surrogate Son is that of Luca's ~ webmaster for SBQR.com. In Surrogate Son, one of my characters is called Stephano and right away Luca's classic face came to mind.

I remember when I first saw French artist Guy Thomas' (website) work in Beef Mag. I really loved the softness he was able to portray while drawing some really fantastic looking husky Bears.

Check out his galleries of artwork ~ some of the links are under construction yet be persistent because there's some real gems hidden among there.

Click here to learn a bit more about this fine artist. From his site: "You could say drawing the male figure and doing full body portrait –capturing the essence of a particular moment – has been at the center of my life and feelings! Yet, when I was young I was very attracted to the strange strength emanating from the old masters portraits. The intimacy of these tender moments expressed frankly and without guise was extremely powerful. This simple essence of life is what drove me to portraiture...

Since my teenage years, I've never stopped drawing what I love most: big, strong, full bodies; hairy with rough or smiling bearded faces. Sometimes with wild guys who loves this kind of man. This is my way of thanking Mother Nature for all the grace and pleasure she brings us with Bears".

Wednesday, March 7, 2007

In life, we all need Cute Little Blokes... that is, we all need little cartoon characters that resembles ourselves, and the man to give you that is Tobias Waterman. It's simple ~ just send him some pics of yourself and you'll be 'bloked' in no time.

Awhile back, I contacted Tobias and asked him to tell us a bit about his Little Blokes, and the following is what he sent: "I started in 2002 when I was commissioned by Bearhug and XXL to create a logo for London's first major Bear event 'Bear Necessities'. one of the logo ideas I submitted was a cartoon of a little man and this was the one that the Bearhug guys and the XXL guys all preferred and so we went for it and I ended up creating 5 caricatures, one for each of the 5 days of the event.

I had a lot of very encouraging feedback about the artwork from loads of guys on the London bear scene, but at the time I didn't really think anything of it and the caricatures sort of went back to sleep for a few months. then I decided one day that it would be fun to draw a couple of my friends just to make them smile!

The next memorable point in the forming of CuteLittleBlokes was that my friend jay was going to be starting a club night for Bears, here in London called 'Growlhouse' and we decided to use two of my caricatures for the logo. Again, they went down really well and one week at the club we pinned loads of prints to the walls of all the caricatures I had done by that time. the most complimentary thing was that each week by the end of the night most of the posters would have been stolen by people who wanted them on their walls at home and bit by bit people started asking who had drawn them and how they could get one done of themselves.

CuteLittleBlokes has sky-rocketed and it is now a full time job for both my business partner, Martin, and I. I certainly never expected or even wanted to turn my cartoons into a business, but that seems to be what has happened and I could not be happier about it!".

Meet the Bearatones: Aaron, Bill, Jonathan, Mike, Paul, Phil, Steve, TJ, Tony & Junior.

From their site: "We are a group of guys who love to sing about the Bear community and the beautiful men in it. Our songs range from the silly to the sublime and all have our own Bear twist to them. We are based in Seattle and are looking forward to performing around the country and hopefully internationally in the near future. Some of us are single and available, some are married, and some are married and available - you'll have to figure out who's who".

And from what I see, they have plans on hitting the studio to record their 1st CD. I wish I had an MP3 to share from these guys but... sniff... I don't, so you're just going to have to do like me and pretend you hear these handsome men singing to you in your head. I also believe in the tooth fairy.

Tell me if you can understand my mind: I hit upon this site called MangaBears.com and I'm excited because I pretty much get excited everytime I discover another Bear site. I look around and realize it hasn't been updated in awhile but that's no big deal because the site could be updated tomorrow and bottom line it's a very neat site, great concept...

Then something catches my eye. It's the can of beans between the guy's leg: in the background picture on the MangaBears site, there's these 2 guys just hanging about after a game of foot... but there's a can of beans and right away my mind thinks of this video called That Guy (of the Living Dead)... watch it and you'll see the referral to the can of beans.

But why... why did I think of that?

Someone please help me with my head.

Usually I see an artist's work before I actually see the artist (kind of like hearing a song on the radio first then seeing what the band looks like after). In this case, when I saw Christophe Jannin's Bearwww profile, something inside me made these kinds of sounds - grrz - wooferz - heavius pantius. Once my insides stopped swooning, I then checked out Chris' webpage to find out he's an incredibly talented artists who has done some very good Bear drawings (among other things). He also makes websites. Take a good look around his site to get to know him a bit better and if your French is up to par, then check out his blog as well.

Zio Polipo was one of the very 1st artists I did an interview many moons ago. He's this superbly overtly nice guy from Italy who draws these incredibly flamboyant images of Chubs. His style is definitely unique, highly colourful and if I had to describe his stuff in 1 word, it would be 'rich'.

Head on over to his homepage Chubby Gallery to see his work. And if you're a fan of Tarot then I'm sure you'll appreciate his Tarot drawings (page 1 - page 2 - page 3). Need more? Then click here to see his Barbarian set (this was the set that was added with the interview).

As the front page of MancerBear's webpage warns you: "this material is dangerous to some minds and may cause homoerotic thoughts and actions". Truly that can't be dangerous - the only dangerous thing I can see happening is that you just might fall in love with MancerBear's artwork... or you might even fall in love with MancerBear himself, however let's focus on his artwork, shall we?

Once you hit his galleries, the 1st thing you'll notice is that MancerBear has this wonderful knack of drawing the kind of men we tend to cry over at night - the big, the husky, the masculine, the hairy, the blue collared and the leather Bears... sigh... and I dig his description about leather: "I can still remember the heady rush I felt the first time I smelt a leather jacket. The smell flew to my brain, and sparked something off that has never really left me. There's something wild about a Bear in leather; natural, normal, primal that cannot be ignored in my eyes. If you ask me, nobody, but nobody wears leather like a Bear". I can't agree more.

You can order prints and sometimes even the originals to his artwork, just check out his site, and MancerBear does do commission work. And click here to see Cigar Daddy.

Someone needs to translate this guy's shiznitz because Moritomo - the artist behind Abnormal Works, is truly one fine talented young man. Yes, my Japanese is non-existent, however when I see someone draw like the picture you see with this article, you know his heart is in the right place... and then when you visit his site, it's almost magical how none of his drawings look anything alike... it's as if he re-invents his idea of Bearness with each canvass... gotta love that.

Maybe you should just head on over to Jeffrey's webpage and learn as well as listen more from his artist.

I have to say that Ralf König (website) has to be one of the most underrated artists within Bear culture yet is one of the most popular cartoonists in Germany (Wikipedia). Very few people from North American know of him yet he's just such a brilliant cartoonist. I was first made aware of him when I rented the movie Killer Kondom which featured characters from his cartoon, and one character in particular is this uber cool Bear cop (played by Udo Samel) who's "gay and doesn't have an issue with it, dammit".

Back to Ralf - if you're feeling a little blue then head on over to his site and just check out a few of his comics. There's much more to see on the German section however there's enough on the English side to put a smile of your face hopefully (especially check out the FAQ section).

Michael Broderick presents HottLead - all-male eroticism. I'm really enjoying this New York artist's work. I wouldn't say it was Bear per se but it's definitely masculine, and I notice a bit of a trend when he has 2 characters in his drawing; one of the guys tends to be a bit older, a bit hairier, a bit more Bearish. Michael's work, in a word, is classy, and in a few words, highly sensual without being pornographic, a task which is never easy.

I remember visiting Art By Andy's site a million years ago... or let's say I've been a fan of this UK artist's work for quite some time now. He constantly redoes his website in the most interesting of ways, and the most recent version of his webpage that's online now is no exception. Browse about and you'll see why Andy is such a well known artist within Bear culture. And if anything tickles your beard then why not make a little purchase... and if you have a little time to mess about, then check out this link to dress (and undress) Hugo.

[About Andy - from his site]: "I'm fascinated by hyper-male men and hyper-masculinity. Why is it that I'm not attracted to just men but men that are extremes of being male, the Alpha males, the leaders of the pack?

Is it that their characteristics mean something about having 'become' a man, no longer being a boy or just being average? Whether due to genetic cause of a guy's overt hirsuteness or through a man working at being different from the i.e. muscle guys. I don't know, but I'm having a log of fun working through my ideas".
