It's sad that when I finally get around to mentioning Riot Bear's blog, he's gone ahead and closed shop. Riot Bear maintained an excellent blog since 2007, posting about all kinds of stuff and posting a ton of photos of himself in the process.

Just reminding you all to bookmark Bearotic because it's truly one of the best Bear sites on the internet right now. It's going beyond the blog, almost working on professional news, and when you wrap your mind around that for a second, just realize how tough that must be. Excellent and resourceful - like discovering great artists like Dchooi Doodles (wow, I would have never guessed Santa looking like that!). I am definitely keeping an eye out for Bearotic come 2010.

Hairrison Street Fair (website - articles) has closed their doors. This means that their 'Hairrison Polar Bear Weekend' is cancelled as well.

And we want to thank the wonderful support of the community, our volunteers and our sponsors (especially Budweiser) for making them such a success. Over 25,000 men have participated in our events, and our Hairrison and AIDS Lifecycle efforts and have raised close to $300,000 for a variety of non-profit organizations - an accomplishment we feel very good about. We are grateful for the opportunity to be of service to the community and for all the great times and friendships we have experienced. But the untimely death of our Treasurer Michael Hendricks and the ongoing economic slump have led us to the decision to put our efforts on hold for the time being. The longer we're on the net, the more sites we've seen come and go. Many of our 'favourite' sites have gone 'HTTP 404' (meaning - they just no longer exist due lack of time, lack of fun, or just lack of interest on the webmaster's part), and when we lose a site we enjoy visiting on a daily basis, it punches a hole in our daily routine (and it tugs at our heart as we sigh realizing our fave site is now no longer).

So over the years, I've become more and more skeptical with every 'Bear' site I discover. Sure they look great when they jump out of the starting gate, but they often lose steam during the course (because on the net, there is no finishing gate - if you reach the finishing gate, well you've lost). Sites have to be the most persistent of long distance runners - because as long as your site is running, you're generating an interest.

All this being said - Bearotic jumped out of them gates like a shining star and now - 2 years later - this website is not only running like a fine tuned machine, it's actually gotten better looking and tons more interesting over time. It's bigger, huskier, meatier. Bearotic has crossed over - moving away from being a blog to working its way on something like a CNN for Bears.

There is something else that I have come to appreciate about this site. Louis, the webmaster for Bearotic, said that he wants Bearotic to be 'safe for work' - he understands how many of us spend a lot of time of our day on the net, and some people might be in a cubicle close to prying eyes. Bearotic is stamped SFW ('safe for work'... I know you know already). Some could criticize his decision while others can appreciate. I'm just really glad that I know Bearotic, because I find myself going back to the site again, and again, and again...

The day after we mentioned that Got Fur? had posted their 'Best of the Bears' poll online, they reported that their site was hacked (article): "Ugh!! We had to reset the voting to zero in several categories – Bear of the Year, Best Bear Bar and Bear Run. Sorry guys, you will have to revote in these categories".

All is well now and their voting page is back up, so you can continue with your votes here. And what's really great this time around is that you can now see who's leading in the votes by checking the results. This should surely compel you to vote for those you believe are deserving to win. The results will be mentioned in the New Year, and good luck to all those nominated.

Last year, about this time, the social network Ning informed all of their groups which were adult in nature that they have X amount of time to gather their stuff and pack their bags. And that was that.

Quickly: Ning is an online platform that has been competing with the likes of MySpace and Facebook. Pretty simple in nature: create a specialized groups (ex: knitters who wear motorcycle boots), then hope people sign up. Once they do, they create a profile, add photos, videos, blogs, etc.. Before they got Ning'ed (articles), these adult groups were flourishing, gathering tons of subscribers. Then Ning decided to cut ties with everything adult-ish and they were ordered to disassemble.

Unfortunately, most of these adult groups had no place to go. The Ning platform provided everything they needed. Most groups just vanished, while some, like ChubSpot, remain 'temporarily closed'. Others, like Guyzingear, became paysites, yet some, incredibly, like BearZone, were able to gather their belongings, moved on, and created their own platform.

The reason I write this article is because I've gotten quite a few people asking me what happened to ChubSpot. To be honest, I don't know. Their main page hasn't changed since they closed down, and I don't know if they will be able to re-open, yet if there is a change, I'll definitely mention it here in the news.

Italian artist Perdido has written an extensive review on the latest web-series THC that I am currently working on. The review is in Italian however throwing it into a translator does the job. Perdido is quite kind with his review, and he also hits on a few subjects that I didn't even consider while making it. A big thank you.

For those who don't know, Perdido is the creator of Bear Degeneration, a highly erotic serial cartoon about a fleet of Bears in space dealing with all kinds of horrible adversaries. Bear Degeneration is initially in Italian with 21 episodes so far, and we've been working at translating the series into English with 16 episodes translated so far, which you can read here.

Getting back to the web-series - THC is short for 'The Horsemen Chronicles', and the 1st episode is called 'Extortion ~ Bear Style'. So far we find out that Roger is being blackmailed for some 'expletive' photos that Gary has possession of and is asking Roger to hand over some money if he wishes to keep this a secret. Roger is initially surprised about the whole ordeal, yet tables can always turn in any situation, and Roger demonstrates this by showing that he in no way wishes to be the victim.

Episode 2 - 'In The Forest' - should be ready in a few weeks. We'll learn a bit more about the mysterious character who's walking about in the woods with his dogs, and we'll also see what Roger does to Gary for trying to extort money from him. Stay tuned.

The nominees are in from 'Best Bear Website' to 'Bear of the Year'. What's great is that instead of having to email in your votes this time, you can now cast your votes from the site itself. The winners from each category will be announced in the New Year as voting ends December 31st, so make sure to head on over to their excellently redesigned page and start casting.

The wonderful world of blogging, and brother has the blogging landscape changed in over the years. At one time blogs were all texts with a few well-placed thumbnail-like photos to give the blog a touch of colour. Today blogs are more and more about big, beautiful and bold photos, pics which reveal everything while concealing nothing.

I'm surprised I hadn't mentioned this site earlier. Way back when I was running Bear-Pics, I checked the archives and a posting I found was one which dates back to March 2001. Back then, the site wasn't up yet however there was a very active Yahoo!Groups (which is now defunct from what I can tell).
